PROMINENT BOSTON POLITICIANS
Samuel Adams
Known popularly for the beer that bears his name, Sam was a rebel-rousing revolutionary. He was also a cousin of John Adams, who, during Sam's lifetime, became President of the United States.
For much of Samuel's life, Massachusetts was a British colony. Adams was known for his passionate speeches in opposition to British rule. When a writ of assistance was granted by the King to Massachusetts, Adams found out that a condition of the writ was that all ships coming into the colonies would be searched. Fearing the colony of Massachusetts would lose its substantial molasses-smuggling income, he rallied the troops - literally and figuratively. He is also associated with the Boston Tea Party.
Sam was Governor of Massachusetts in the late 1700s. His contribution to the shaping of Boston's history is basic but very important. He acted as the voice of the revolutionaries in Boston. He represented, and became an inspiration for, grassroots leadership in the Boston area.
John Adams
John Adams was born in 1793. In 1767, he caused trouble by sending literature to the other colonies inviting them to help Massachusetts fight colonial rule. The King of England demanded that the colonial legislature make an official stand against the literature and demand it back from the various colonies. In a brave act of defiance, the legislature refused. The King sent troops to show he meant business. John Adams later became the second President of the United States.
John F Kennedy
John F. Kennedy was born in Boston in 1917. JFK started his political career in the U.S. Senate. In 1962, he was the youngest (and first Catholic) President. Many people in Boston (which has a higher population of Irish people than Ireland does) take great pride in the fact that JFK was the hero of their Irish parents and grandparents. He was the grandson of Boston's Mayor John "Honey Fitz" Fitzgerald. Most of his Democratic political leanings came from the influence of his father Joe, who served as Ambassador to Great Britain. John often accompanied his father to American embassies overseas and was able to meet many prominent political figures.
