There are many little wardrobe tricks to de-emphasize a bit of a excessive flab. Many will argue that black is by all means the most slimming color (or "non-color") that one can wear. Black certainly has an extremely slimming effect.
However, it isn't always the color of a garment or outfit that creates a slimming effect. It's the USE of color that creates this effect. Monochromatic dressing (that is, to dress in all of one color, or in shade of the same color family) is a popular trick to creating a slimmer illusion. For instance, wear a light mint green turtleneck and slacks, covered with a blazer of a darker mint green-and you'll find that wearing shades in the same family create the same effect as wearing all black. The difference is that wearing a "color" is much cheerier, and can offset any additional pounds.
Something to keep in mind, is that no matter how much of one color you wear, if the clothing is ill-fitted, the purpose will have been defeated.
If you're going for a monochromatic look, be sure to keep your colors "cool"-that is, stay away from brash reds, bright day-glo oranges, and neon-like lime greens. This will have the opposite effect of what you're trying to achieve.
