Poetry: The American Revolution

The Portsmouth Hymn
(Emerson and Concord revisited)

By ruddy fort that stems the tide
The flag December's freeze re-furled
Where men of principal risked their blood
Shots fired but not heard round the world

On this sand bank, by roaring sea
Coronate with awe the voter's throne
No memory needs to guarantee
If sons still vote when sires are gone

The foe, long since friend, we accept
And conqueror no revulsion keeps
The fort no ruin can intercept
Like freedoms dream the seed it reaps

Thank Providence whose gentle care
Inspired these Heroes will to see
That Liberty was worth the dare
To fight so we could all be free
