A horse hoof is made up of six major parts. These major parts are the hoof wall, coronet, sole, frog, the bars, and the internal structures such as the bones, cartilage, tendons and connective tissue. All six parts are integral to the health of the horse and his hooves. However, I am going to focus on the coronet.
The coronet, also known as the coronary band, is the upper part of a horse's hoof. The coronet is the source of growth for the hoof wall. The coronet is located directly above the hoof wall. It is protected by a thick layer of skin and hair.
Injury to the coronet can be very serious and veterinary attention should be sought. Injuries to the coronet band can impact hoof development and growth and potentially lead to a permanently unsound hoof wall.
Proper care of your horse's hooves, including the coronet, are essential to the health of your horse.
