The SenseCore founding team is a team of licensed plumbers with expertise in water management and leak repair. With daily exposure to disastrous leaks and distraught customers with massive unexpected water bills, the value proposition of connected sensors with real-time monitoring and response was clear.
Dylan, SenseCore’s Founder, discovered Helium through mining with SenseCap. It quickly became a passion, as he discovered the enthusiasm and excitement within the Helium community. Only after navigating the network as an operator and learning how to manage and implement network infrastructure did he begin to harness the real potential.
SenseCore partnered with a few third party manufacturers and developed a comprehensive system for leak detection and water monitoring. The systems are now implemented across over 20 locations including the Super8 Guelph Hotel.
Challenge
Super8 Guelph, a prominent hotel located in Guelph, Ontario, faced significant challenges in managing water usage and detecting leaks within their facility. With laundry operations being a crucial aspect of their daily operations, any water-related issues posed a substantial risk to their equipment and finances.
The hotel’s laundry room was prone to leaks, with one particularly major incident involving a 2″ forced sump pump discharge spraying water across the room. Additionally, the hotel suffered from ongoing leaks that could escalate into significant water wastage and damage if left unchecked. After this incident, the hotel turned to SenseCore.

Solution
Super8 Guelph partnered with SenseCore to implement a comprehensive smart water management solution. This solution included the deployment of Kraken Ultrasonic Flow Meters and Vitai Leak Sensors throughout the facility, integrated with the SenseCore Control Suite platform for real-time monitoring and alerts.
The Kraken clamp-on Flowmeters are able to be deployed in a way that is entirely non-invasive to the plumbing systems, and real-time monitoring can both detect trends and critical abnormalities. SenseCore also incorporates local municipality water rates for easy evaluation of costs.
Results
Upon installation, the SenseCore system immediately began monitoring water usage and detecting anomalies within the hotel’s infrastructure. The system was configured to provide instant alerts to designated staff members, ensuring prompt action in the event of any water-related issues.
Mitigation of Major Leaks
Less than three months after the installation of the system, a 2” sump pump discharge began spraying water. The SenseCore system alerted the on-call front desk within seconds, and the worker was efficiently able to stop the leak.
Estimated Cost Savings: This prevented extensive water damage to the laundry equipment with an estimated cost savings of $8,000 in equipment damage and repair.
Prevention of Consistent Water Flow Leaks
The SenseCore system detected several flow inconsistencies and and issued alerts indicating potential leaks in the facility. These alerts enabled staff members to promptly identify and address the issues, preventing prolonged undetected water wastage.
Estimated Cost Savings: Prompt repairs prevented approximately 9 liters per minute of water usage for 72 hours in each instance, totaling to 38.88 cubic meters. With each cubic meters costing $6.45, the total savings per instance amount to $250.80. Detecting these leaks 12 times this year resulted in a cumulative savings of $3,009.60.
Three Month ROI: Kraken’s 1.5” sensor costs $1,199.99, and the Vitai Leak Sensors cost $89.99, with subscription costs of $20 and $12 per month respectively. With just the first major leak detected, the Super8 achieved ROI in under three months.
